Downriggers

Heavy-duty downriggers for trolling precision

The Game

Made in canada. Scotty has produced quality downriggers for over 50 years.

Downriggers were designed to help your bait mirror fish movements, target a specific depth, and keep your lure there while you await a bite.

Scotty makes several lines of durable downrigger models, including electric and manual downriggers as well as models suitable for small boats or kayaks.

See our Downrigger Basics video for an animated presentation on the fundamentals of using a downrigger on your boat.

A more detailed overview on the benefits of using a downrigger can be found further down the page in the section titled Why Use a Downrigger?

Electric Downriggers

The go-to choice for serious fishermen and guides. Unmatched in power, they boast the fastest retrieval speed of any downrigger on the market.

All of our High Performance Electric Downrigger models come equipped with an illuminated digital counter, a 1.25″ diameter telescopic boom with a length range of 36 – 60″, and a clutch brake with the largest braking surface in the industry.

Made from engineering-grade materials and with a history of marine success and dependability, these models are a top choice for anglers the world over.

Why Use

A Downrigger?

There are many differences between fish species in the way they adapt to dynamic environmental conditions (e.g. water temperature, light, and oxygen levels). These factors profoundly influence the depth at which fish hunt—a key variable for anglers.

To effectively mimic the behaviours of fish prey, it can be highly beneficial to have our lures at precise depths when trolling. This requires a different approach—and a different set of gear—than one would use for fishing in rivers, streams, and other small bodies of water.

With a downrigger, you can easily target specific depths based on the seasonality of fish behaviours and movements, allowing for a more directed approach to getting in the strike zone.

Scotty Downriggers are built for this purpose—to give anglers the upper hand when fishing for a variety of freshwater and saltwater fish species.

And when it comes to our downriggers, the focus is on purposing quality engineering-grade materials, rugged heavy-duty design, maintainability, modularity, and a high degree of interoperability with our mounting systems.

In 12 steps

A detailed overview of the process for using a downrigger

1
Step One
Mount the downrigger on
your boat.
2
Step Two
Attach a weight to the downrigger line using the integrated clip and then attach a release clip to the downrigger line.
3
Step Three
Loosen the drag on your reel and then let out a length of line behind the boat.
4
Step Four
Take the length of line from your reel and attach it to the downrigger release clip and then place the rod securely into your rod holder.
5
Step Five
Now that the weight is securely attached to your downrigger line, carefully suspend the weight over the side of your boat.
6
Step Six
Slowly release the break by pulling back on the break handle. This will lower your downrigger weight into the water.
7
Step Seven
When the weight has been lowered just beneath the surface of the water, let off the brake handle to stop the line descent and then attach your stopper beads to the downrigger line.
8
Step Eight
While monitoring the depth measurement displayed on the depth counter, continue letting out the line until you have reached the desired depth.
9
Step Nine
Now that we're at the right depth, let off the brake handle to stop the line descent.
10
Step Ten
When trolling, it is best to minimize slack in the rod line.

Tighten the drag on your reel. Reel in excess line until your rod bends into a fairly tight arc downward towards the water.

We want to keep the rod in this position until we get a bite or we're ready to pack it in. Hopefully the former.
11
Step Eleven
When a fish strikes the lure, we'll usually be able to see or hear a physical sign from the fishing rod.

When we do, it's time to get ready! If the fish applies enough force, then it will release your line from the clip.

If the release clip is still in place, it's easy enough to disengage it—take the rod and move it in an upward motion until there's enough pressure for the line to be released.
12
Step Twelve
Now that we've got a fish on, we're going to turn on the auto stop on our downrigger.

It's easy to get excited and forget this step, but it's important to do this. We don't want the downrigger line to become tangled with the fishing line.

Hitting auto stop will quickly retrieve the weight, and the stopper beads we placed earlier will ensure that the downrigger comes to a stop on its own—without any further attention needed—leaving us free to play the fish and get it on to the boat.
